Who we are
The Broes art shop saw the light of day in 1952 and very soon made a name for itself in the field of Scandinavian design. In 1966 the business split in two, with one branch going in for interior decoration and tableware, the other for prints and picture framing. The Koen Broes gallery which grew from this has specialized since the early eighties in graphics and art on paper and offers a wide spectrum of artworks, techniques and artists. The gallery is run by Koen and Carine Broes. .
What we do
Choosing for graphics was the result of our passion for old prints, maps and atlases and of our fascination for books, for the touch and smell of paper, as well as for the various techniques and coloured copper engravings. Graphics are more than an artistic form of expression, they are a technical feat of craftsmanship. Every printing plate (copper, zinc, steel, plexi, pvc, stone, linoleum, wood etc.) makes its own demands and requires a different approach. Every procedural technique (burin, dry-point, etching, carborundum, etc.) needs separate skills and produces different results.
Prints are usually multiples (several copies are printed) but they are also unique works of art. The inking, adjusting and printing of the handled plates provide the artist with many opportunities to intervene in the creative process of the work of art. There are always differences in colour, in intensity, in finish, in hardness and in burr. A printing workshop which prints by order of an artist and with his approval obtains more uniform results than a master printing and experimenting by himself.
We prefer to seek out artists who are not yet demi-gods, but who make no concessions in terms of technical quality and radiance. Every item in our collection has our unqualified backing. We welcome new artists in our shop.
